Berlin Walking Tours Compared

Two public walking tours touch the gate: one starts at it, one ends near it. This page compares start points, length, price and language, with the building works of autumn 2026.

Walking tours around the Brandenburg Gate

Most visitors see the gate on their own, because it is an open-air monument without admission. A walking tour adds a guide, a route and stories. The two examples below are public tours by single providers. They show what one product offers, not a market range, and a listed price is not a promise of a free place on your day.

One detail matters: a tour that ends near the gate is not a tour that starts there. Read the meeting point first.

Building work began at the gate on 20 October 2026. From 26 October the usual night lighting is off, expected until early December, and the outer passages are closed. A walk by the gate still works, but expect fences and a different look in the evening.

Explore Berlin is listed daily all year at 10 a.m., with an extra start at 1 p.m. from April to October. The "from" price is a starting price. Child or senior fares and cancellation terms should be checked at booking. The Free Tour of Berlin can be reserved ahead or joined by showing up at the meeting point. Routes and length can vary with the guide.

What to check before you book

Four things that differ between walks.

Meeting point

Explore Berlin meets at Reichstagufer 17, a short distance from Friedrichstrasse station, and finishes near the gate. The free tour starts at the gate and ends at Checkpoint Charlie. Arrive a little early either way.

Language

Both walks above are listed in English, the second also in Spanish. Check the language of your date before you book if you want a German-language walk.

What the price covers

Public transport tickets are not part of the Explore Berlin price, and that walk does not need one. No museum entry is included in a street walk. A tip-based tour is not free of charge: guides expect a tip at the end.

Times

Start times shown for "today" on a booking page can change from day to day. Treat them as a guide and check the current time for your date.

Other guided options in the area

Not walks from the gate, but useful if you want a guide.

East Side Gallery tour

The public standard tour costs €5, reduced €3. A tour longer than 90 minutes costs €7, reduced €4. Group tours should be booked ahead. The painted wall itself is free to visit and open around the clock.

A guided bike ride

A 3.5-hour Highlights tour on a rental bike costs €35 for adults. It starts in Prenzlauer Berg, not at the gate.

Audio guide at the Wall Museum

The Wall Museum at Checkpoint Charlie sells an audio guide for €5. Adult entry is €18.50.

A short walk without a guide

If you prefer to go on your own, the gate is a good starting point. East of it lies Pariser Platz, and from there Unter den Linden runs about 1.5 km toward the Schlossbrücke and Museum Island. West of the gate the Tiergarten begins, with the Victory Column at the Großer Stern. The Reichstag is one U5 stop away, about a minute by train, and its dome is free with registration, see the Reichstag page.

For history on your route, the history of the gate covers the years from 1788 to 1989. The memorial to the murdered Jews of Europe lies close to the gate and has its own quiet page. If you plan many train rides, compare a pass on the WelcomeCard page.

Berlin walking tours: frequently asked questions

Is there a walking tour that starts at the Brandenburg Gate?

Yes. The free tour that is listed with a meeting point in front of the Starbucks at the gate starts there and ends at Checkpoint Charlie. It is tip-based and lasts about 2 hours. The 3-hour Explore Berlin walk starts elsewhere and ends near the gate.

How much does a walking tour cost?

The 3-hour public walk is listed from €19.90 in 2026. The free tour has no fixed fee and works on tips. Prices change, and a starting price may not apply to every date.

Do I need a public transport ticket?

Not for Explore Berlin, which is a walk and does not use trains. A ticket is not part of the tour price, so you need one for your own rides. A single ticket in Berlin AB costs €4.00 in 2026.

Are the tours in German?

The two walks above are listed in English, and the free tour also in Spanish. Check the language of your date before you book.

Does a tour get me into the Reichstag dome or a museum?

No. A street walk includes no museum entry. The Reichstag dome is free, but you need to register on your own. See the Reichstag page.

Is this site a tour operator?

No. This is an independent guide. It is not connected to the State of Berlin, visitBerlin or any of the providers named above.
