The boulevard that starts at the Gate
Unter den Linden is the boulevard that leads from the Brandenburg Gate and Pariser Platz toward the Schlossbrücke. It is about 1.5 km long, a figure from a tourism editorial team and not from a survey of the street.
Along the way you pass the Humboldt University, the Staatsoper, the Neue Wache and the Zeughaus. The boulevard is part of Berlin-Mitte, and for most visitors it is the natural walk after the Gate.
This site is independent. It is not the city of Berlin, a tourist board or the Senate, and it does not run any building named here.

What lies along the street
The landmarks that are named for the boulevard.
Pariser Platz
The walk starts at the square east of the Gate. Embassies, the Akademie der Künste and the Max Liebermann Haus stand here. See the Pariser Platz page for hours and addresses.
Humboldt University
The university building is one of the landmarks along the boulevard. It is a working university, so treat it as a building to see from the street.
Staatsoper
The Staatsoper is the opera house on the boulevard. Check its own programme if you want to see a performance, because this guide does not list shows or prices.
Neue Wache and Zeughaus
The Neue Wache and the Zeughaus both lie along the street. The photo on this page shows the Neue Wache. Opening hours are set by the operators, so check them for the day you plan to go.

The rebuilding of the boulevard
One phase is finished, a larger one is planned.
The Senate administration responsible for transport runs a rebuilding of Unter den Linden in several phases. The focus of the central promenade is a section of about 770 m between Wilhelmstraße and Universitätsstraße.
One phase is already done. From autumn 2021 to June 2023 the carriageway was renovated and new markings were laid, with separate areas for cars, buses and bikes. That is an old construction phase and not a new building site.
A newer plan was reported in an excerpt from the Berliner Morgenpost on 9 August 2026. It names the award of the contract and the start of work as expected at the end of 2026, with work in sections until autumn 2029. This is a plan, and the actual start can differ, so check the situation before you go.
| Phase | Period | Status |
|---|---|---|
| Carriageway renovation and new markings | Autumn 2021 to June 2023 | Done |
| Rebuilding of the central promenade | Start expected at the end of 2026, in sections to autumn 2029 | Planned |
The rebuilding of the central promenade and any further change to the street space must not be mixed up with the earlier carriageway phase. No completion has been announced.
Getting there and how to walk it
Start at the Gate and head east.
The station Brandenburger Tor serves the S1, S2, S25, S26 and U5, in fare zone A. A single ticket for Berlin AB costs €4.00 in 2026 (reduced €2.50) and is valid for 120 minutes in one direction, with changes allowed. A round trip is not covered by one single ticket.
Walk from Pariser Platz east along the boulevard. Allow time at the university, the opera and the Neue Wache rather than treating the street as a single stop. Work at the Gate itself continues: the outer passages are closed from 20 October 2026, and the night lighting is off from 26 October 2026 until probably early December. See the history of the Gate for context.
If you want to stay close to the boulevard, read where to stay. It explains Mitte and Tiergarten as locations. Check the distance from the exact address, not from the district name.
Guided walks that cover the area
Two examples, with different start points.
One English-language walking tour of about 3 hours is listed from €19.90 in 2026. It meets at Reichstagufer 17, near Friedrichstraße, and ends near the Brandenburg Gate. It runs daily at 10 a.m. and, from April to October, also at 1 p.m. Public transport tickets are not included in the price.
A tip-based walking tour of about 2 hours starts in front of the Starbucks at the Gate and ends at Checkpoint Charlie. It is listed in English and Spanish. Tip-based means you pay what you decide, not nothing. Neither tour starts and ends at the Gate, and both run in English or Spanish, so check the language and the meeting point before you book.
