Berlin by bike: what a guided ride involves

The best-known guided ride in the listings is the Highlights tour by Berlin on Bike. It lasts about 3.5 hours and covers 12 to 15 km. A rental bike and a helmet are included in the price. The tour is listed in German, so ask about English dates before you book if you need them.

One point surprises many visitors: the public bike tours do not start at the Brandenburg Gate. They start and end at the Kulturbrauerei in Prenzlauer Berg, with the entrance at Knaackstraße 97. The nearest U-Bahn is the U2 at Eberswalder Straße, about 200 m on foot according to the provider. Private tours can agree on a different start.

Building work at the gate began on 20 October 2026. The outer passages are closed, and from 26 October the usual night lighting is off until about early December, so expect fences if your route passes the gate.

Choose the right tour

The routes are different products.

Highlights or Berlin Wall

The provider lists a Highlights tour and a separate Berlin Wall tour. Do not assume that every bike tour passes the gate, Tiergarten and the whole Wall route. Read the route description of the tour you book.

Getting to the start

Plan your own journey to Prenzlauer Berg before the tour, since it does not begin at Brandenburger Tor. Check the current timetable on the day you ride.

Rain

The Highlights listing allows free rebooking or cancellation at rain. Look at the forecast the evening before and read the terms again.

Riding on your own: Mauerweg and Tiergarten

The Mauerweg is a footpath and cycle route of about 160 km through Berlin and Brandenburg. Its route is described in 14 stages. Do not confuse its length with the length of the historic border installations. For the history of the Wall and where to see it, read the page on the Berlin Wall.

At Bernauer Straße the outdoor exhibition is open daily from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. and free. The East Side Gallery runs for about 1.3 km between Ostbahnhof and Oberbaumbrücke. It is a painted section of the former border wall by 118 artists from 21 countries, and the outdoor stretch is open around the clock, free of charge.

In the Tiergarten you may ride only on the paths and areas where cycling is allowed. Pedestrians have priority. E-scooters count as motor vehicles and are in general not allowed in green spaces. Barbecues and open fires are prohibited except at marked grill areas, and you should not feed wild animals. If you meet a wild boar with piglets, keep a wide distance.

Unter den Linden is also part of many bike routes. A press report from 9 August 2026 gives a planned start of rebuilding works at the end of 2026, in sections until autumn 2029. Ask about a diversion before you plan a route along the boulevard. More on the Unter den Linden page.

How to combine a ride with the gate

A simple order for a first day.

Morning: the ride

Book the Highlights tour for a morning start and take the U2 to Eberswalder Straße. The ride takes about 3.5 hours.

Afternoon: the gate on foot

Visit the gate and Pariser Platz afterwards. The gate is free and open-air, though the outer passages are closed during the works.

Later: one free stop

The dome of the Reichstag is free, but you must register, and it is closed from 19 to 30 October 2026. See the Reichstag page.
